The total poultry production of Ethiopia is estimated at 56.5 million [9], of which about 99% are raised under the traditional backyard system of management, while 1% are exotic breeds maintained under intensive management system [2]. The backyard (traditional) poultry production system is characterized by low input, low out put and periodic destruction of large proportion of the flock due to disease outbreaks [3].
